We’ve all seen the commercials, right? The ones with the funny little white Aflac Duck. When I think of those commercials I think of Aflac the insurance company. I mean, they are the number one provider of supplemental insurance in the United States… But, as I’ve recently learned, there’s SO much more to this company than JUST insurance.
Aflac has been fighting childhood cancer for nearly 20 years!!! They created the Aflac Duckprints Award to honor individuals they’ve come across that are the real unsung heros of the fight against childhood cancer. The Duckprints purpose is to generate awareness and encourage help with and for those affected by childhood cancers.
They have also donated more than $87 million to the Aflac Cencer Center and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Amazing, right?!
Now through Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 11), Aflac will donate $2 to the Aflac Cancer Center for every tweet/retweet, or post/share on Twitter or Facebook post of former Aflac Cancer Center patient Trisha Henry Gaffney’s inspiring story using the #Duckprints hashtag.
Diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive tumor usually found in the head, neck, hands or feet of young children, Trisha was just 19 years old. She spent a year receiving treatment at the Aflac Cancer Center and then hoped to get on with her life. She began dating Andrew Gaffney during her treatment, they later married and hoped to start a family. However, after Trisha made an appointment with the Cancer Survivor Program at the Aflac Cancer Center they learned that because of the treatment she had received for the cancer she would not be able to carry a child.
“It’s devastating when you can’t have a family,” Trisha said. “I froze my eggs that year. I thought, ‘Screw you, cancer! I want my own kid.’”
In April 2013 Trisha and Andrew became parents to Isabella, born through a surrogate friend of Trisha’s sister. Isabella just celebrated her first birthday and Trisha will celebrate her second Mother’s Day this year thanks to the Aflac Cancer Center and its programs.
You can help other people experiencing childhood cancer to be able to go on and live their lives just like Trisha did. Again, all you have to do is help to get the word out! It’s an opportunity to not only help spread awareness, but to contribute to a great cause! Learn more about Aflac, #Duckprints and the Aflac Cancer Center on the Aflac Facebook Page and on the Aflac Twitter Page.
And while they’re at it Aflac is offering a $50 Restaurant.com gift card to one lucky Truly Lovely reader. Enter using the Rafflecopter form below. The giveaway will close on May 11th, Mother’s Day.
